Universal handy chargers are due
The International Telecommunication Union ITU has approved a Universal charger (Universal Charging Solution – UCS) for all the world’s mobile phones. Malcolm Johnson, Director of the ITU standardization offices, said: “This is an important step in reducing the environmental impact of mobile charging, and also has the advantage that mobile phone use is getting easier. Universal Chargers are a reasonable solution, and we look forward to it to be used also in other areas. ” The International Telecommunications Union is a specialized agency of the United Nations.
It is based on a micro-USB interface, the UCS has an energy efficiency of 4-stars or more, it was said.
According to the GSMA mobile industry organization the UCs brings a 50 percent reduction in energy consumption in standby mode, prevents a mountain of garbage of 51,000 tons per year and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of 13.6 million tonnes per year.
But there exists no obligation for manufacturers to use the new chargers. A number of producers have, however, already decided. “We plan to start Universal Charger internationally in the first half of 2010,” said Aldo Liguori, a spokesman for Sony Ericsson, the BBC.
Motorola, Nokia, Apple, Sony Ericsson, LG, NEC, Qualcomm, Research In Motion, Samsung and Texas Instruments had agreed in the summer of 2009, to standardize UCS in Europe.
