Google fighting IE6

Google plans to stop supporting the outdated IE6. Its limited support of modern functions is hindering Google to unfold the full potential of Google apps on this old browser.

Modern functions are – how else – only supported by modern browsers. Apart from this, the poor support of web standards ( xhtml, css ) requires a lot of additional development time to make applications work on IE6.

IE6 is a nuisance for any web developer, and although Microsoft released already 2 successors, namely IE7 and IE8, many users still browse the web with this old, insecure and slow browser. As a direct consequence of this, Google now stops supporting this browser.

Google sets the requirements for successfully running their apps – namely, only newer browsers are supported, which are Google Chrome 3.0, IE7, Firefox 3.0 and Safari 3.0.

If this trend continues, web developers all around the globe could get into the position to not having to code for the IE6 anymore, easing the process of creating websites, lowering production time and thus costs, which in the end is a major advantage for every customer.

artViper welcomes this decision, and has stopped supporting IE6 a while ago, as you can read in this post. IE6 is only supported by direct request of clients. It’s about time that administrators, companies with stone-age old scripts stop using IE6, take some money in their hands and update their systems. It’s not just for the web developers around the world, it makes browsing at least a bit more secure if people stop using this dinosaur.
